Facebook, Google asked to sanitize content or face block-Delhi Court
Facebook India and Google India have been, according to the latest order from the Delhi High Court asked to sanitize the content on their sites, or suffer the same fate in India, as they did in China, confirms Times of India. The websites have been asked to keep their sites devoid of any objectionable, defamatory content, be it in the form of text, images or video. Justice Suresh Kait, while making the statement said that the websites need to put a mechanism in place, which would keep such content in check and remove any kind of content, which was potentially offensive. "Like China, we will block all such websites," he stated, while delivering his statement.
Facebook, Google, among several others have been facing the heat from the government over the kind of content posted on them. Former Additional Solicitor General Mukul Rohatgi, who appeared on behalf of Google India, stated, "...postings of "obscene, objectionable and defamatory" articles and other things cannot be "filtered" or "monitored. No human interference is possible, and moreover, it can't be feasible to check such incidents. Billions of people across the globe, post their articles on the website. Yes, they may be defamatory, obscene but cannot be checked."
